COURSE ACCOMMODATION

People have come from all corners of the world to attend my “KnowYour Antiques” courses and enjoy a break away in rural Angus. There are beautiful Glens to explore, numerous golf courses and stately homes all very close by.

Here are some local accommodation suggestions:
The Garden & Courtyard Flats, Pitscandly House provides two newly refurbished self-catering accommodation (one sleeping 2 with twin beds and one sleeping three with a double and a single bed) with linen and breakfast ingredients provided. £75 per flat per night, please contact Jeremy. (Two minutes walk to the workshop, min stay 2 nights)
Newton Mill House, by Brechin, 4 star B&B. It is a superb 18th Century house in the peaceful Angus countryside owned by Rose & Steven Rickman Tel. 01356 622 533. The tariff is from £50 Bed & Breakfast with a £15 single person supplement per night. An evening supper is also available from £28. A 5% discount will be given to clients for the “know your antiques course” if the stay is for 2 nights or longer. (About 11 miles from the workshop)
The Chapelbank Hotel, 69 East High Street, Forfar, Angus, DD8 2EP. Tel 01307 463 151. Four rooms have recently been revamped and it has a bistro and restaurant. From £60 single per room to £90 double per room. The Church bells can be noisy at night. (about 3 miles to the workshop)
Atholl Cottage B&B, 2 Robertson Terrace, Forfar DD8 3JN owned by Marion Robertson Tel: 01307 465 755 or 07957 913 974. It is near the town center and is around 3 miles to the workshop. £29 +.per person. Single person in double room is £38.
The Northern Hotel, 2 Clerk St., Brechin, DD9 6AE. This is a recently renovated 3 star hotel in the centre of town, with its own bar and restaurant. Tel. 01356 625 400 £75 per night (single) and £89 (double) and is approximately 9 miles from the workshop.
Strathmore Arms, 1 The Square, Glamis, by Forfar. This is a country pub with good pub grub but the accommodation is nothing smart. Tel 01307 840 248 Fax 01307 840 618 ( 5 miles from workshop) £55 single to £85 double per room.
Newton Farmhouse B&B, Newton of Fothringham, Inverarity, Forfar, DD8 2JU . This is a 4 star B&B owned by Louise & Graeme Nicoll Tel. 01307 820 229 or 07768 431 020.
It is around 7 miles away and costs around £30+ per person. They also have a self catering cottage.
West Mains of Turin, By Forfar provides simple farm house B&B, 3 miles away. Contact Mr & Mrs Jolly Tel: 01307 830 229. The Tariff is £28 or £30 per person depending on the room.
Glamis B&B, Halton of Ogilvy Farm House, Glamis DD8 1UH 01307 840 229. One room with twin beds; £28 or £35. Open April to end of October.
HOW TO GET THERE

The nearest airport and train station are located in Dundee, which is around twenty minutes by car from Pitscandly.

Alternatively, Aberdeen is an hour’s drive away and Edinburgh is an hour and a half. Both are served cheaply by many different airlines and good rail lines.

Gow Antiques workshop is situated between Dundee and Aberdeen on the A90.

  • If travelling North take the exit off for Forfar opposite the McDonalds (fast food)
  • Continue straight into town through two sets of traffic lights, (not counting two sets of pedestrian lights)
  • After the second set of traffic lights the road begins to bear right, go straight ahead signed to Brechin, Lunanhead and Aberlemno on B 9134.
  • Go through the village of Lunanhead which is 1 mile outside of Forfar
  • Take the first turning on the right, 1/4 mile after village, signposted to Myreside
  • Take the next left, up the drive, and the workshop is in the farmyard on the left

THINGS TO DO LOCALLY

Forfar is in the heart of Angus in between Dundee and Aberdeen, with the sea to the east and the unspoilt beach of Lunan bay.

  • To the west and north area the Angus Glens offer excellent hill walking in beautiful unspoilt surroundings.
  • There are also many stately homes and gardens which can be visited whether National Trust or private. Glamis Castle is 6 miles with many examples of furniture we have restored.
  • There are about ten golf courses within half an hour of all standards, with the pro courses of Carnoustie and St. Andrews not far away.
  • Various country sports are on offer, fishing on the North and South Esk are both excellent sea trout and salmon rivers.
  • Shooting and stalking both possible on nearby estates, depending on the time of year.

Our courses have been attended by the Art and Antiques Unit of Scotland Yard, antique dealers from all different fields from all over the globe, collectors, and guides of stately homes, farmers, and many other enthusiasts including a helicopter pilot! Our youngest participant was 19 and our eldest has been 84 so everyone is very welcome!
